California doctor indicted in $45 million botox fraud scheme

A California doctor is facing serious allegations of healthcare fraud, as she is accused of orchestrating a scheme that defrauded Medicare of $45 million through fake Botox injections. Dr. Violetta Mailyan, 45, who ran the Healthy Way Medical Center in Glendale, California, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for submitting fraudulent claims for Botox procedures that were never actually performed.

According to the Department of Justice, Mailyan allegedly submitted millions of dollars in false claims to Medicare for unnecessary Botox injections. The indictment revealed that these procedures were never provided, with Mailyan even submitting claims for injections on dates when she or the supposed patient were traveling internationally. Shockingly, she even submitted a claim for administering Botox to a person who was in federal prison at the time.

In addition to the fraudulent claims, Mailyan is also accused of falsifying medical records in response to a grand jury subpoena. The indictment further alleges that she billed for services on dates when her office was closed, indicating a pattern of deceit and manipulation.

Mailyan is facing nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation of health care offenses. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud charge and up to five years for each obstruction count.

Despite attempts to reach out for comment, Mailyan’s office did not respond, and their website appears to have been deactivated. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and honesty in the medical profession, and the severe consequences that can result from fraudulent activities in healthcare.
