Visa’s AI agents automating hundreds of purchases for customers

Visa has successfully completed hundreds of AI transactions as part of a pilot program that began after the company’s product event in April. The payments network, along with competitors in the fintech industry, is rapidly developing tools that allow consumers to delegate transactions to artificial intelligence agents.

Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s head of growth products and partnerships, expressed confidence in the widespread adoption of AI technology this year, stating that consumers are becoming more comfortable with using AI in various environments. The use of AI is revolutionizing the e-commerce experience, altering how customers shop for and purchase goods.

In April, Mastercard announced the testing of a feature called Agent Pay, which enables AI agents to shop online on behalf of customers. Amazon also introduced a “Buy For Me” feature, while PayPal and Perplexity have collaborated on agentic shopping tools. A recent survey by Visa revealed that nearly half of U.S. shoppers are utilizing AI in their purchasing decisions.

While the data is still limited, Birwadker believes that AI tools could prove beneficial for routine purchases or for events like buying concert tickets. Visa has plans to launch pilot programs in Asia and Europe next year, collaborating with over 20 partners on AI agent tools.

The advancements in AI technology are reshaping the way consumers interact with e-commerce platforms, offering a more personalized and efficient shopping experience. As AI continues to evolve, companies like Visa are at the forefront of integrating this technology into their services to enhance customer convenience and satisfaction.
