Gas Prices Hit a Record : Here’s How to Stretch Every Dollar

The national average for regular gasoline is hovering around $4.11 per gallon, the highest ever recorded for this date and the most expensive August on record, according to AAA. The broader energy shock includes diesel prices above $5 and record refining margins as the Iran war disrupts refining operations and export routes. In Europe, natural-gas futures have climbed above €65 per megawatt-hour, reports Euronews.

For households, the impact adds up quickly. A driver covering 10,000 miles a year in a vehicle averaging 25 miles per gallon uses about 400 gallons. At $4.11 per gallon, that is roughly $1,644 annually, before commuting, errands, or road trips. CNN Business says diesel refining margins have reached record levels, raising costs for trucking, deliveries, groceries, and other everyday necessities.

Start with the easiest savings: combine errands, avoid unnecessary idling, keep tires properly inflated, and accelerate smoothly. Driving slightly slower on highways can also improve fuel economy. Use AAA’s gas-price tracker to compare nearby stations, but do not drive far enough to erase the savings.

Fuel-rewards programs and warehouse-club discounts may help frequent drivers. A five-cent-per-gallon discount saves $2 on a 40-gallon fill-up: small, but meaningful over time. Consider whether the membership fee pays for itself before joining.
