Rangers beat Panthers 5-1 in first outdoor hockey game in Miami
The Winter Classic was an event to remember as the New York Rangers took on the Florida Panthers in the first outdoor game ever played in the Sunshine State. The Rangers came out on top with a resounding 5-1 victory, thanks in large part to the stellar performance of Mika Zibanejad.
Zibanejad had a day to remember, making Sweden’s Olympic team and then going on to have a hat trick and a five-point game, the first in NHL outdoor game history. His impressive display of skill and determination helped lead the Rangers to victory in this historic matchup.
Artemi Panarin also had a standout game, scoring two goals, while Alexis Lafrenière contributed with three assists. Goalie Igor Shesterkin was solid between the pipes, stopping 36 shots to secure the win for the Rangers.
Despite the Panthers’ efforts, including a goal from Sam Reinhart, they were unable to overcome the Rangers’ offensive firepower. Panthers coach Paul Maurice praised the NHL for organizing such a spectacular event, even though his team fell short on the ice.
The game was played at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, with the roof open and the temperature at 63 degrees Fahrenheit. The unique setting added to the excitement of the game, with snow falling from the stadium’s edges and bursts of fire lighting up the sky.
Both teams embraced the outdoor game theme, with the Rangers sporting all-white outfits and the Panthers channeling a “Miami Vice” vibe in white suits and pastel shirts. The spectacle was truly a sight to behold, showcasing the advancements in technology that allow for hockey to be played in such unconventional settings.
In the end, the Rangers came out on top and now look ahead to their next game against Utah, while the Panthers will regroup and prepare to face Colorado. The Winter Classic may have come to an end, but the memories made on this historic night will last a lifetime.
