Sharks acquire goaltender Laurent Brossoit in a trade with the Blackhawks

The San Jose Sharks made a significant move on Thursday by acquiring goaltender Laurent Brossoit from the Chicago Blackhawks. In exchange, the Sharks sent defensemen Ryan Ellis and Jake Furlong, along with a 2028 fourth-round pick, to the Blackhawks. The Sharks also received defenseman Nolan Allan and a 2028 seventh-rounder in the deal.

Brossoit, who signed a two-year contract with the Blackhawks in July 2024, never played a game for Chicago due to a knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire previous season. The 32-year-old goaltender, a former sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft, has a solid track record with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in 140 career games with previous stints in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vegas.

Ellis, a 35-year-old defenseman, has been out of action since November 2021 and has a remaining salary cap hit of $6.25 million through the 2026-27 season. Furlong, a 21-year-old prospect, has two assists in 12 games this season with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. On the other hand, Allan, 22, has contributed two goals and four assists in 29 games this season with Rockford of the American Hockey League.

Allan, who was selected by the Blackhawks with the No. 32 pick in the 2021 draft, played 43 games with Chicago last season and recorded one goal and seven assists. The trade signifies a strategic move for both teams as they look to strengthen their rosters for the remainder of the season.

Overall, the acquisition of Brossoit adds depth to the Sharks’ goaltending position and provides valuable assets to the Blackhawks as they continue to reshape their lineup. This trade marks an important milestone in the ongoing evolution of both teams as they navigate the competitive landscape of the NHL.
