ICE detainee dies of ‘presumed suicide’ at Texas detention facility, agency says

An undocumented immigrant, Victor Manuel Diaz, tragically passed away while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Camp East Montana detention facility in Texas. The 36-year-old man from Nicaragua was found dead on January 14 in what authorities are investigating as a presumed suicide. Diaz had entered the U.S. illegally in March 2024 and was ordered for removal by an immigration judge in absentia in August 2025.

ICE officers encountered Diaz in Minneapolis on January 6 during an immigration crackdown in Minnesota. He was arrested for violating immigration laws and was processed for removal on January 12. Two days later, Diaz was discovered unconscious in his room by security staff. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

This unfortunate incident marks the second reported death at the Camp East Montana facility this month. Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old man from Cuba, passed away on January 3 after experiencing medical distress. ICE is currently investigating the cause of his death.

ICE emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in its custody. The agency released a press statement expressing its dedication to providing secure and humane environments for detainees. ABC News has reached out to the El Paso County medical examiner’s office for updates on both cases but has not received a response at the time of reporting.
