Maryland sues Trump administration to stop construction of ICE detention facility
The state of Maryland is taking legal action against the Trump administration in an effort to halt the construction of an immigration detention facility within its borders. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown filed a complaint on Monday, alleging that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) violated federal law by purchasing a warehouse in the state without conducting an environmental review or seeking public input.
Brown stated in the complaint that the Trump administration is determined to push forward with its aggressive immigration policies, even if it means disregarding the law. The DHS reportedly acquired a vacant commercial warehouse outside of Williamsport, Maryland, for $102.4 million as part of a broader plan to convert warehouses across the country into detention centers to support the administration’s immigration crackdown.
The lawsuit filed by Maryland asserts that DHS is purchasing warehouses nationwide with the intention of transforming them into immigration detention and processing centers capable of housing thousands of immigrants. In response to inquiries from ABC News, a DHS spokesperson dismissed concerns about environmental impact, emphasizing the agency’s focus on enhancing national security.
The DHS spokesperson stated that the facilities being established will meet established detention standards and play a crucial role in expanding detention space to support the enforcement efforts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency is committed to making arrests across the United States and is actively working to bolster its detention capabilities.
Maryland’s complaint argues that the federal government’s actions violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) by failing to conduct necessary environmental assessments or seek input from the public. The state contends that the conversion of the warehouse into a massive detention facility will have adverse effects on Maryland’s environment, economy, and public health and safety.
The state of Maryland is seeking legal intervention to halt any further construction on the facility and ensure that the appropriate environmental reviews and public consultations are conducted before proceeding with the project. This legal battle underscores the ongoing tensions between state governments and the federal administration over immigration policies and the treatment of immigrants within the United States.
