Lions add running back Isiah Pacheco as the new backup to Jahmyr Gibbs, AP source says

The Detroit Lions have made a significant move by adding running back Isiah Pacheco to their roster as a replacement for David Montgomery. This decision came after the Lions traded Jahmyr Gibbs’ backup before the start of free agency. Pacheco, who spent his first four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, has signed a new deal with the Lions. The Chiefs, on the other hand, secured a $45 million, three-year contract with Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in the early hours of free agency.

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers have made changes in their cornerback position by signing Benjamin St-Juste and informing Nate Hobbs of their plan to release him. St-Juste has inked a $10.5 million, two-year deal with the Packers. The transactions are set to be official on Wednesday, the first day of the NFL’s new league year.

Pacheco brings a wealth of experience to the Lions, having rushed for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns during his time with the Chiefs. Montgomery, who expressed his desire to move on from the Lions, was traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and draft picks.

In addition to the Pacheco signing, the Chiefs have also bolstered their defense by agreeing to contracts with safety Alohi Gilman and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. Gilman’s arrival addresses a need in Kansas City’s defensive backfield, while Thornton adds a deep threat element to the team’s offense.

St-Juste, who previously played for the Chargers, brings versatility to the Packers’ defense with his ability to contribute on both defense and special teams. On the other hand, Hobbs, who struggled with injuries last season, is set to be released by the Packers as part of their salary cap strategy.

Elsewhere, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reunited with running back Rico Dowdle on a $12.25 million, two-year deal. Dowdle, who previously played under Steelers coach Mike McCarthy in Dallas, had a standout season with the Cowboys in 2024.

The NFL offseason is in full swing, with teams making moves to strengthen their rosters ahead of the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as free agency continues to unfold in the coming days.
