McLaren launches investigation after Norris and Piastri unable to start F1’s Chinese Grand Prix
McLaren, in collaboration with their engine supplier Mercedes, has initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the terminal electrical faults that led to both of their cars being sidelined during the recent Chinese Grand Prix. The team’s Formula 1 champion, Lando Norris, emphasized the importance of identifying and rectifying the issue to prevent any recurrence in the future.
During the race weekend, Norris found himself stranded in the garage as time ticked away, preventing him from joining the grid. Meanwhile, his teammate Oscar Piastri was forced to withdraw just moments before the race commenced due to separate electrical issues with the Mercedes-powered unit. This setback marked the first time in Norris’ career that he missed a race, while Piastri experienced his second consecutive absence following a crash at the Australian Grand Prix.
Expressing his disappointment, Norris stated, “We just have to take it on the chin, learn what the problem was, and make sure it never happens again.” The entire McLaren team, including engineers, mechanics, and Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP) colleagues, is determined to address the issue promptly to resume competitive racing and secure valuable points.
A joint investigation between McLaren and Mercedes’ HPP engine division has been announced to delve into the technical intricacies that led to the electrical failures. McLaren has acknowledged the challenge of keeping pace with the Mercedes factory team under the new 2026 regulations, which prioritize electrical power utilization. The team has also expressed concerns regarding the optimization of the Mercedes systems due to a perceived lack of information.
Aside from McLaren’s troubles, other teams faced reliability issues during the Chinese Grand Prix. Four cars, including Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi and Alex Albon’s Williams equipped with Mercedes engines, failed to start due to various technical malfunctions. Aston Martin also encountered setbacks with Lance Stroll retiring early due to a battery failure and Fernando Alonso forced to stop due to discomfort from vibrations.
The Aston Martin team has been plagued by reliability issues, prompting team principal Adrian Newey to highlight the severity of the situation. He emphasized the need for significant improvements to prevent long-term damage to the drivers’ hands caused by excessive vibrations in the car.
In conclusion, the Formula 1 landscape continues to witness technical challenges and reliability concerns among teams, underscoring the intense competition and demands of the sport.
