Shark attack survivor speaks out after he was bitten in both legs surfing
A surfer who was attacked by a shark off the coast of Northern California bravely shared his story from his hospital bed, detailing how he managed to free himself and make it back to shore safely. James Eastman, 39, was enjoying a quick surf session at Big River Beach in Mendocino Headlands State Park when the terrifying incident occurred.
Recalling the moment of the attack, Eastman described seeing the shark’s head above the water and immediately thinking of his wife and child. Determined to survive, he went into survival mode and attempted to fend off the shark by hitting it on the nose. His quick thinking paid off as the shark eventually swam away, allowing Eastman to paddle back to shore on his surfboard.
Fortunately, three off-duty lifeguards who were surfing nearby rushed to assist Eastman, who had sustained injuries to both legs. He was quickly taken to Adventist Hospital in Fort Bragg, where his wife works as an emergency room nurse.
Chloe, Eastman’s wife, expressed her shock and fear upon hearing about the shark attack, stating that it was her worst fear coming true. Despite the common presence of sharks in California waters, encounters with humans are extremely rare. John Ugoretz, a wildlife expert, mentioned that there have only been 234 shark-related incidents in California since 1950.
Grateful for the support from the community, Eastman expressed his love for surfing and his desire to get back in the water soon. He acknowledged his luck in surviving the attack and expressed his determination to continue pursuing his passion for surfing. Wildlife officials have collected DNA samples to better understand the circumstances of the incident and have warned the public about the possibility of the shark remaining in the area.
As a precautionary measure, nearby beaches have been closed for 48 hours, with signs posted to notify the public. California State Parks emphasized the importance of sharks in the coastal ecosystem and reassured visitors that interactions between humans and sharks are rare. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the need for caution when enjoying water activities.
