Here are key CBS News anchors and correspondents who got the ax today

CBS News Makes Cuts Under Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss

CBS News recently announced a round of cuts under editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, resulting in the departure of several anchors and correspondents. More layoffs are expected in the coming weeks.

Among those let go on Friday were correspondent Elaine Quijano, who also served as the weekend morning anchor in New York; correspondents Omar Villafranca, Nidia Cavazos, Andres Gutierrez, Dave Malkoff, and Karen Hua. Additionally, Washington, DC-based reporter Nick Kurtz and political reporter Hunter Woodall were also part of the layoffs.

Environmental correspondent David Schechter was another casualty of the cuts, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

CBS News did not provide a comment on the layoffs, which saw a 6% reduction in the workforce and the closure of CBS Radio after a century-long run.

More layoffs are anticipated as contracts for top talent expire. Names like “60 Minutes” correspondents Scott Pelley, Sharyn Alfonsi, and Cecilia Vega are rumored to be on the chopping block, while Bill Whitaker is expected to retire.

In a memo to staff, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski acknowledged the impact of the cuts on their colleagues, emphasizing that those affected would be treated with care and respect.

The layoffs were framed as part of the industry’s evolution, with Weiss and Cibrowski pointing to the need to adapt to changing audience dynamics and remain competitive.

While the restructuring will result in a smaller newsroom in some areas, the duo emphasized the necessity of making room for new initiatives to stay relevant in the evolving media landscape.
