Remembering Ed Bernard: A Tribute to a TV Icon

On January 23, the entertainment world lost a true talent with the passing of Ed Bernard at the age of 86 in Northridge, California. Best known for his roles on the iconic TV series “Police Woman” and “The White Shadow,” Bernard leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and a lasting impact on the industry. His son, Edward B. Bernard, confirmed the news of his father’s death, highlighting not only his professional accomplishments but also his role as a beloved family man. 

Described as a devoted father, proud grandfather, and a man of deep curiosity, Ed Bernard was more than just a star on screen. His love for food, especially sushi and healthy cooking, his passion for learning, and his unwavering faith were just a few aspects of his character that endeared him to those who knew him best. 

Bernard’s career began in 1971 with a role in the classic film “Shaft” directed by Gordon Parks. He went on to appear in notable films such as “The Hot Rock” and “Across 110th Street” before transitioning to television with his debut in “Love Story” in 1973. However, it was his role as Detective Joe Styles in the hit series “Police Woman” that solidified his place in TV history. Portraying Styles for all four seasons of the show, Bernard’s performance garnered critical acclaim and earned the series multiple Emmy nominations. 

Following his success on “Police Woman,” Bernard joined the cast of “The White Shadow” as Principal Jim Willis, further showcasing his versatility as an actor. His on-screen presence extended to other popular TV series like “Hardcastle and McCormick,” “ER,” and “Cold Case,” demonstrating his range and talent. In addition to his television work, Bernard also graced the stage in productions such as “Five on the Black Hand Side” at the American Place Theatre. 

Born in Philadelphia on July 4, 1939, Ed Bernard is survived by his sons Edward and Mark Sheldon Bernard, as well as his grandchildren Liz, Joshua, Samantha, and Alexandra. His wife Shirley Mae Bernard, whom he was married to for 44 years, passed away in 2005. In accordance with his wishes, Bernard will be laid to rest at sea in a private family service.
