Zelenskyy visits Gulf Arab states to talk drone defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy embarked on surprise visits to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, leveraging Ukraine’s drone expertise to assist Gulf Arab states in countering Iran’s attacks in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has already inked 10-year security pacts with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with a similar agreement with the UAE in the final stages of negotiation. Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in producing advanced drone interceptors that are both cost-effective and efficient, proving instrumental in repelling Russia’s invasion since February 24, 2022.
In exchange for its support to Gulf nations, Ukraine is seeking high-end air-defense missiles to bolster its defense capabilities against Russian aggression. Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts included visits to Saudi Arabia and discussions on potential involvement in restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz.
During his visits to the UAE and Qatar, Zelenskyy engaged in discussions with leaders on regional security concerns amid the Iran conflict. The ministers of defense from Ukraine and Qatar signed agreements on defense sector cooperation and investments, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in enhancing security.
Zelenskyy highlighted the significance of building strategic partnerships with Middle Eastern countries, focusing on joint initiatives in defense, investment, energy cooperation, and sharing military expertise. Ukraine’s integrated defense model has proven effective in countering Iranian-made drones, with Gulf partners benefitting from Ukraine’s combat-tested capabilities.
The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has disrupted global travel and led to a surge in oil prices due to the Strait of Hormuz blockade. Zelenskyy’s efforts to strengthen ties with Middle Eastern allies underscore Ukraine’s commitment to combatting terrorism and promoting global security.
Despite speculation about potential diversion of weapons from Ukraine to the Middle East, Zelenskyy reassured that there have been no signals from the US regarding such actions. The Ukrainian leader also addressed misconceptions about security guarantees and territorial disputes, emphasizing the need for comprehensive peace agreements to end the conflict.
As Russia intensifies its drone strikes on Ukraine, causing casualties and damage, Zelenskyy’s diplomatic engagements in the Middle East reflect Ukraine’s determination to defend its sovereignty and forge alliances to counter external threats. The collaboration between Ukraine and Gulf Arab states signifies a shared commitment to regional stability and security.
