How an insurance plan for foster kids threatened an 8-year-old’s cancer care
Ollie Super, an 8-year-old girl, has been battling cancer since she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma as a toddler in foster care. Her parents, who adopted her in 2020, recently discovered that her cancer had returned late last year. Desperate for a solution, they tried to enroll Ollie in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy at UNC Health in North Carolina. However, their hopes were dashed when they were informed that the state’s new insurance for kids in foster care would not cover the treatment.
North Carolina is one of 14 states that offer specialized managed care plans for children in the foster care system. These plans are designed to expand coverage for children with complex medical needs. However, like in other states with similar plans, North Carolina families have encountered obstacles in accessing care. Many doctors who were previously covered under Medicaid were not included in the specialized plan, leaving parents scrambling to find new healthcare providers or insurance.
The rollout of North Carolina’s specialized insurance plan for foster children was riddled with problems from the start. Families reported that their healthcare providers were not accepting the new insurance, causing delays and confusion in accessing care. UNC Health, a major healthcare provider in the state, initially refused to participate in the plan, further complicating matters for families like the Supers.
Despite these challenges, the Supers are preparing for Ollie’s upcoming CAR T-cell therapy treatments. The therapy, which genetically reprograms the patient’s white blood cells to fight cancer, is seen as Ollie’s last hope. With reliable health insurance, the family can now focus on Ollie’s treatment without the added stress of financial burdens.
Ollie’s journey with cancer has been a long and difficult one, but her family remains hopeful for a positive outcome. They look forward to the day when Ollie can enjoy being a kid again, playing with her siblings and their beloved family dogs. The road ahead may be tough, but with the support of her family and the right medical care, Ollie is determined to fight her cancer and reclaim her childhood.
