WGA West Urged by State Senator to Reach Deal With Striking Staffers
The Writers Guild of America has recently come to an agreement with the studios, however, the majority of the staff from its West local chapter remains on strike. The strike, which has been ongoing for 51 days, has caught the attention of California Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, who has urged the guild to bring an end to the work stoppage. In a letter addressed to the guild, Smallwood-Cuevas emphasized the importance of ending the strike in order for the Guild to operate at full capacity and effectively carry out its mission.
The strike was initiated by about 110 members of the Writers Guild Staff Union on February 17, following unsuccessful contract negotiations over a period of five months. The staffers are advocating for better pay and job security, particularly emphasizing the need for seniority protections in promotions and layoffs to prevent favoritism within the organization.
Despite the WGA West offering what they consider a fair deal, including $800,000 in salary increases, negotiations have not resulted in a breakthrough. Talks between the two sides took place on March 17 and March 24, with no resolution reached. The WGA West has made it clear to its members that the strike will only end once the WGSU accepts a deal or decides to return to work without one.
The striking staffers faced a setback on April 1 when they lost their health care coverage due to more than a month passing without qualifying employment. However, they have received support from members of the Los Angeles City Council, including Eunisses Hernandez, Katy Yaroslavsky, Hugo Soto-Martinez, and Tim McOsker, who signed a letter in solidarity with the WGSU in March. Senator Smallwood-Cuevas also endorsed the demands of the WGSU in her letter to the guild leadership, emphasizing the importance of fair contract provisions for the workers.
In conclusion, the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild Staff Union highlights the importance of fair wages, job security, and seniority protections within the organization. The support from political figures and the continued negotiations between the two sides indicate a potential resolution in the near future. It is crucial for the Guild to address the concerns raised by its staff in order to ensure a productive and harmonious working environment for all members.
