LIV Golf execs have ’emergency summit’ with rumors of demise flying

LIV Golf executives are facing a pivotal moment as reports emerge of an “emergency summit” being held in New York to discuss the uncertain future of the Saudi-backed breakaway golf league. Despite attracting top players like Bryson DeChambeau from the PGA Tour, LIV Golf has struggled to gain traction in terms of television viewership in the US.

According to The Telegraph, a major announcement is expected from LIV Golf, with the media center closed to reporters ahead of the upcoming event in Mexico. Surprisingly, no LIV executives were present at the tournament in Mexico City, raising speculation among players about the nature of the impending announcement.

The X account @acaseofthegolf1 hinted at a “bombshell announcement” on social media, further fueling anticipation and uncertainty surrounding the future of LIV Golf. The account advised followers to “bet the under” on any predictions related to the announcement.

Since its inception in 2021, LIV Golf has disrupted the golf world by offering lucrative contracts to players through the backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The league managed to attract top talent like DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson, signaling a shift in the landscape of professional golf.

In 2023, the PGA and LIV signed a “framework agreement” outlining their shared goal of growing and promoting the game of golf globally. However, progress has been slow, with no concrete agreements reached despite high-profile meetings involving key figures like former PGA commissioner Jay Monahan, PIF head Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley.

Monahan, who faced criticism for his handling of the LIV Golf situation, stepped down as PGA commissioner last year, with Brian Rolapp taking over the role. Speculation persists about a potential deal between LIV and the DP World Tour, though sources from the Euro tour have indicated that the New York meeting is not related to their organization.

The last LIV event took place in South Africa, where DeChambeau emerged victorious. However, he faltered at the Masters, failing to make the cut as Rory McIlroy claimed victory at Augusta for the second time.

As the golf world awaits the outcome of the emergency summit in New York, the future of LIV Golf hangs in the balance, with players, fans, and stakeholders eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the league’s journey.
