78-year-old woman dies from snake bites in Northern California: Sheriff

Fatal Snake Bites Claim Third Victim in California

Tragedy struck in Northern California as a 78-year-old woman succumbed to snake bites, becoming the third fatality from venomous snake attacks in the state this year. The incident took place in Redwood Valley on April 8, where the woman was out for a walk and fell victim to three venomous snake bites, as reported by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite receiving prompt medical attention at a nearby hospital, the woman tragically passed away on April 10, highlighting the deadly consequences of such encounters with venomous snakes. While snake bites are not uncommon in the United States, with approximately 7,000 to 8,000 reported cases annually, the mortality rate remains relatively low, with only about five deaths attributed to snake bites each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The recent incident in California adds to the already alarming statistics of snake bite fatalities in the state this year. Earlier in February, a 25-year-old man lost his life after being bitten by a rattlesnake while mountain biking in Irvine, Southern California. In a separate incident in March, a 46-year-old woman met a similar fate after a rattlesnake bite during a hike at Wildwood Regional Park, also in Southern California.

As California enters peak rattlesnake season, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife warns the public to remain vigilant, as snake bites are most prevalent between April and October. Awareness and precautionary measures are crucial in preventing further tragedies caused by encounters with venomous snakes.
