Jim Furyk is returning as US Ryder Cup captain for 2027 with Tiger Woods out

Jim Furyk Named U.S. Ryder Cup Captain for 2027 Matches in Ireland

HOUSTON — Jim Furyk has been selected as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland. This decision comes as the Americans aim to regain their momentum against a dominant European team that has been on a winning streak for the last three decades.

The PGA of America confirmed the news on Friday, following an Associated Press report on Furyk’s appointment. Furyk becomes the fourth U.S. captain to lead the team for a second time since 1979, marking the modern era of the Ryder Cup.

After Tiger Woods withdrew himself from consideration following his arrest on suspicion of DUI, Furyk was chosen by the Ryder Cup committee to lead the U.S. team. Furyk expressed his passion for the Ryder Cup and his commitment to preparing the team for success in 2027.

In 2018, Furyk captained the U.S. team in Paris, where they suffered a 17 1/2-10 1/2 defeat to Europe. Despite the loss, Furyk’s leadership was acknowledged, and he later led the Americans to victory as Presidents Cup captain in 2024.

Europe, under the leadership of captain Luke Donald, secured a second consecutive victory at the last Ryder Cup. Furyk’s experience and dedication to the team make him a valuable asset in the quest to reclaim the cup on European soil.

Furyk’s appointment comes after the PGA of America set a deadline for Woods to decide on the captaincy, with Furyk being the backup plan in case Woods opted out. Following Woods’ decision to step away from golf indefinitely, Furyk was chosen to lead the U.S. team in 2027.

With a wealth of Ryder Cup experience and a proven track record as a leader, Furyk is poised to guide the American team to success in Ireland. His previous roles as a player, assistant, and captain make him a trusted figure in the team room.

Europe has dominated the Ryder Cup in recent years, winning 11 of the last 15 matches. Furyk faces the challenge of winning the cup on European soil, a feat the Americans have not achieved since 1993.

As the countdown to the 2027 Ryder Cup begins, all eyes will be on Jim Furyk and his team as they prepare to take on Europe at Adare Manor in September 2027.
