Darren Aronofsky, Maite Alberdi Close Guadalajara Festival

Chilean filmmaker Juan Pablo Sallato made a significant impact at the 41st Guadalajara Film Festival with his black & white fiction feature debut, “Red Hangar.” The film delves into the long-suppressed details surrounding the military coup that ousted Chile’s President Salvador Allende. “Red Hangar” swept the Ibero-American category at the festival, winning every single award, including Best Ibero-American Fiction Film, Best Direction for Juan Pablo Sallato, and Best Performance for lead actor Nicolás Zárate.

During the closing ceremony, Zárate emphasized the importance of reflecting on the past to shape a better future, especially in the face of resurging fascism. The festival also saw other standout films like “Querida Fátima,” which explored the issue of feminicide in Mexico, and “A Child of My Own,” a Mexico-set documentary by Maite Alberdi.

In addition to film screenings, the festival also honored industry professionals like Elena Vilardell from Ibermedia and filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who received an International Tribute. Aronofsky expressed his love for Mexico and highlighted the power of storytelling in shaping humanity.

The festival also featured discussions on film incentives in Mexico, Portugal, and Spain, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in the film industry. Furthermore, the launch of Iberfest, a collaboration between 11 Iberoamerican film festivals, aimed to streamline cooperation and cost-sharing among the participating festivals.

Chile was celebrated as the Country of Honor at the festival, with filmmakers like Pablo Larrain and Sebastian Lelio leading the delegation. Panels, masterclasses, and discussions on revitalizing Mexican-Chilean co-productions were also held.

The festival concluded with the announcement of the winners across various categories, including Best Mexican Feature Film, Best Ibero-American Documentary, and Best Animated Feature. The diverse range of films showcased at the festival highlighted the talent and creativity of filmmakers from across Latin America.
