Katy Perry looks to build California youth camp, neighbors may have other plans
Katy Perry, the renowned A-list singer, is making headlines with her latest project aimed at providing a massive youth camp in the picturesque Goleta Valley. The camp, named Gratitude Canyon, is the brainchild of Perry and her sister, Angela Lerche. Situated at 183 Winchester Canyon Road in Goleta, California, this camp is set to occupy a sprawling 110.37-acre lot.
The proposal for Gratitude Canyon is scheduled to be presented before the South Board of Architectural Review, sparking mixed reactions from the local residents. One concerned Winchester Canyon resident, Dave Root, expressed worries about potential issues such as increased traffic, fire hazards, and strain on water supply and wastewater capacity if the camp is approved. Root also questioned the compatibility of the project with the agricultural zoning designation of the area.
Despite the objections raised by some residents, the Firework Foundation, led by Perry, assures that they will uphold the property’s agricultural heritage and natural landscape. The foundation plans to implement a low-impact design that preserves the rural character of the surroundings, ensures privacy for neighbors, and complies with County land use policies.
Gratitude Canyon is envisioned as a haven for underserved youth from the local community, offering enriching programs centered around arts, nature exploration, and creative expression. The camp will feature various facilities, including eight cabins, counselor housing, a director’s residence, a gymnasium, a dining hall, a pool, and extensive landscaping improvements spanning nearly 55,350 square feet. Moreover, the camp will incorporate restored habitat areas, orchards, pathways, outdoor recreation spaces, and nature-based activity zones to provide a holistic experience for the campers.
The existing structures on the site, covering 22,833 square feet, will be repurposed to accommodate the camp’s operations. The Firework Foundation aims to utilize only a minimal portion of the land for new construction, preserving the majority of the property as open landscape.
As the fate of Gratitude Canyon hangs in the balance, the community awaits the decision of the South Board of Architectural Review. While concerns have been voiced, the potential benefits of this youth camp in nurturing the next generation cannot be overlooked. Only time will tell if Katy Perry’s vision for Gratitude Canyon will come to fruition and make a positive impact on the youth of Goleta Valley.
