Big Bear bald eagle baby chicks named in touching tribute

Big Bear’s famous bald eagle chicks have finally been given names, thanks to the overwhelming response from fans worldwide. Jackie and Shadow’s two eaglets are now officially known as Sandy and Luna, after receiving over 63,000 name submissions. Local Big Bear Valley third graders had the final say in choosing the names, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.

The name Sandy holds a special tribute to Sandy Steers, the former executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, who passed away in February. Sandy was a fierce protector of the eagles’ habitat, and it was fitting that one of the chicks was named in her honor. The organization revealed that Sandy was the most popular submission, appearing 3,706 times out of the total entries.

Chick 1, the larger and more submissive eaglet, was named Sandy with the majority of student votes, while Chick 2, considered smaller and more aggressive, received the name Luna. The two fluffy internet sensations hatched over Easter weekend and have since captured the hearts of viewers worldwide through the Big Bear nest cam.

In an effort to protect the eagles’ Moon Camp habitat from potential development near Big Bear Lake, the nonprofit launched a major fundraising campaign. Fans were encouraged to submit names for the chicks between April 15 and April 26, with donations supporting the conservation group’s habitat preservation efforts.

The U.S. Postal Service also joined in on the excitement by announcing a new series of stamps featuring Sandy and Luna. The stamps serve as a reminder of the bald eagles’ significance as national symbols of freedom, strength, and courage. The eaglets have truly become a symbol of hope and resilience, captivating audiences around the world.
