Man shot during ‘exchange of gunfire’ with CPD officers in South Chicago, police say
Chicago police officers were involved in a shootout with a man in the South Chicago neighborhood on Monday night, following a “person with a gun” call. The incident took place in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive, where a 911 caller reported a man wearing a colorful hoodie approaching their home with a gun.
Upon responding to the call, officers quickly located the suspect who began to flee. After attempting to conduct an investigatory stop and instructing the man to keep his hands visible, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and the police. The suspect was subsequently shot and taken to the University of Chicago in serious condition. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the altercation.
The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old man with a previous arrest record dating back to 2015, had a firearm in his possession at the time of the incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is currently investigating the officer-involved shooting and has urged anyone with information to come forward.
In a preliminary statement released by the Chicago Police Department, it was confirmed that both officers discharged their service weapons during the encounter, resulting in the suspect being struck multiple times. The officers provided immediate medical assistance before the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital. The investigation into the incident, including the use of force, is ongoing with the cooperation of CPD and COPA.
