Sony Xperia 1 VIII: Release Date, Price & Specs

Sony’s Xperia 1 phones have always attracted a dedicated fanbase of tech enthusiasts. With unique features like microSD card slots, headphone jacks, and front-facing speakers, Sony has carved out a niche for itself in the competitive smartphone market. However, in recent years, the Xperia 1-series has faced stiff competition from brands like Vivo and Oppo, with its cameras and design starting to show their age.

Enter the Xperia 1 VIII, Sony’s 2026 flagship offering that promises to shake things up. The biggest design change comes in the form of a square-shaped camera module on the left side of the phone, a departure from the traditional traffic-light style arrangement. The new ‘ORE’ texture, inspired by rough stone, adds a unique touch to the device and offers improved grip for users. The phone is available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold color options, each with a built-in shutter button.

On the camera front, Sony has made significant upgrades with the Xperia 1 VIII. The phone now features a 48Mp telephoto sensor with a larger sensor size for better low-light performance and natural bokeh. While the new telephoto lens sacrifices the super macro capabilities of its predecessor, it offers full autofocus and improved image quality. The phone also boasts ultrawide and main cameras that promise exceptional low-light performance comparable to full-frame sensors.

Sony has also enhanced its camera software, combining multiple frames at a RAW sensor level for better dynamic range and noise reduction. The new AI camera assistant analyzes scenes and suggests settings like lens selection and filters, catering to both novice and experienced users. The Xperia 1 VIII is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage expandable via microSD card.

While the phone retains features like a headphone socket and front-facing speakers, the battery technology remains somewhat underwhelming with a 5000mAh cell and 30W charging. Sony’s decision to offer only four years of OS updates falls short compared to competitors offering longer support periods. Priced at £1,399 for the 256GB model and £1,849 for the 1TB Native Gold variant, the Xperia 1 VIII aims to justify its premium price tag with top-notch camera technology and unique features.

Pre-orders for the Xperia 1 VIII are now available, with a release date set for June. Early birds will receive a free pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones. While the phone may not come cheap, Sony’s commitment to innovation and distinct features sets it apart in a crowded smartphone market. Stay tuned for a detailed review to see if the Xperia 1 VIII lives up to the hype.
