Man shot near Howard CTA station on Thursday afternoon, suspect detained

A violent altercation near the Howard CTA station in Rogers Park turned dangerous on Thursday afternoon when a 39-year-old man was shot after a physical fight escalated. According to Chicago police, the altercation between the victim and another individual, whose age is still being verified, quickly turned physical before the other person pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the calf and was promptly transported to Saint Francis Hospital in good condition, as confirmed by police reports. Following the shooting, law enforcement officers utilized CPD surveillance cameras to track the movements of the gunman, eventually locating him in the 7400 block of North Paulina Street. The suspect was swiftly taken into custody, and a firearm was also recovered in the process.

This incident marks the fifth shooting in Rogers Park this year, with three of the incidents occurring within close proximity along Paulina Street. Earlier in the year, on February 15, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the 7700 block of North Paulina, followed by a shooting involving a 26-year-old man on the same block on February 25. The sole fatality in Rogers Park this year was the tragic murder of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman on the pier at Loyola Beach on March 19.
