Search in waters off the Maldives after 5 Italians killed in a cave dive accident
Tragedy Strikes Italian Divers in the Maldives
ROME — An Italian expert has joined police divers and rescue vessels in the Maldives for search operations following a scuba diving accident that claimed the lives of five Italian divers. The tragic incident occurred when the divers were exploring caves at a depth of 50 meters (164 feet) on Thursday.
Italy’s Foreign Ministry stated that the circumstances surrounding the divers’ deaths are still under investigation. Maldivian authorities immediately launched a major rescue operation, utilizing boats, aircraft, and dive teams to search the area. One diver was found deceased in a deep underwater cave, with the body recovered from nearly 60 meters (200 feet) below the surface, according to the Maldives National Defense Force.
The remaining four divers were believed to be trapped inside the same cave, prompting officials to deploy additional teams and specialized equipment for a risky and challenging rescue operation. The Italian foreign ministry confirmed that an Italian expert is assisting the coast guard and Maldivian vessels in the search efforts.
Plans are underway for a dive to assess access to the underwater cave in the Vaavu Atoll where the tragedy occurred. However, rough weather conditions may delay the recovery process. Italy’s ambassador to Colombo has traveled to Malé to meet with coast guard officials, while the Italian Embassy is providing support to the victims’ families.
The group of divers had embarked on a morning dive near Alimathaa and was reported missing when they failed to resurface by midday on Thursday. Unfavorable conditions, including a yellow weather alert, were reported at the time of the incident.
As the investigation continues and rescue efforts intensify, the diving community mourns the loss of these experienced divers. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
