What to know about the death of Congolese man in Ireland
In Ireland, there is a growing demand for justice following the tragic death of a Congolese man who was restrained by security guards outside a Dublin department store.
The distressing video of Yves Sakila being pinned to the ground by security guards has sparked outrage among activists, drawing parallels to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.
Sakila, 35, was pursued and apprehended by security guards on May 15 under suspicion of shoplifting at Arnotts, Ireland’s renowned department store in Dublin. He was unresponsive upon the arrival of the police and was later declared dead at a hospital.
At a demonstration outside government buildings, Suzie Tansia from the Congolese Community Ireland emphasized that Sakila’s death was unjust and that he was a human being who deserved dignity and respect.
The cause of Sakila’s death has not been disclosed by the police, citing operational reasons.
According to attorney John Gerard Cullen, Sakila’s death was allegedly linked to the theft of a perfume bottle. Cullen mentioned that Sakila, who grappled with homelessness and substance abuse, was a vulnerable individual.
Authorities are urging witnesses to provide any information they may have regarding the incident.
