Bus driver charged with manslaughter in massive crash that killed 5 on I-95 in Virginia

The tragic bus crash that occurred on Interstate 95 in Virginia has left five people dead and 44 others injured. The driver of the bus, Jing S. Dong, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident. The crash took place in Stafford County, Virginia, about 45 miles south of Washington, D.C., in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports from the National Transportation Safety Board and the police, the accident occurred when traffic slowed down for a work zone, but the bus failed to stop and collided with a Chevrolet Suburban. This initial collision set off a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles, resulting in a devastating crash.

Tragically, four of the five fatalities were passengers in the Acura SUV that caught fire during the collision. The victims included a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The fifth victim, Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, from Worcester, Massachusetts, was in the Suburban at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported 44 injured individuals to nearby hospitals, three of whom were in critical condition. The bus, which was traveling from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, was carrying approximately 34 passengers at the time of the crash.

The NTSB is currently investigating the factors that may have contributed to the collision, including driver fatigue, impairment, and mechanical issues. They are also looking into the design of the work zone and whether proper safety measures were in place. Additionally, they are reviewing Jing S. Dong’s commercial driver’s license and training records to determine his qualifications to operate a bus.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed concerns about Dong’s inability to speak English and emphasized the importance of proper training and communication for commercial drivers. He stated that drivers who cannot understand road signs or communicate with law enforcement should not be behind the wheel.

The crash caused significant traffic delays on I-95, but all lanes have since reopened. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure that such a tragedy does not occur again in the future.
