Laos cave rescue workers report ‘knocking sound’ in search for last 2 missing people

Rescue workers in Laos have reported a promising development in their search for two missing individuals trapped in flooded caves for nearly two weeks. The group of seven villagers entered the caves in Xaisomboun province on May 19 in search of gold, but became trapped due to flash flooding caused by heavy rain.

Fortunately, five villagers were rescued last week, with one individual even learning how to scuba dive in order to make his way to safety. Pumping water out of the system allowed four more people to crawl out on their own. However, the search for the remaining two men continues, with rescuers exploring a sixth chamber where they may be located. A coordinator mentioned on Facebook that workers heard a “knocking sound” inside the cave, potentially signaling the presence of the missing individuals.

The rescue team is not just relying on pumping out water; they are also utilizing LiDAR data and satellite imagery to scan the area and aid in the rescue operation. By analyzing the mountain structure and locating possible cave chimneys or air holes that could connect to the trapped chamber, they hope to expedite the rescue process.

Divers from around the world have joined the effort, navigating the tight, intricate network of tunnels in the caves. Australian cave diver Josh Richards, who was on site to assist, described the moment when the first villagers were successfully recovered. He recounted how they heard cheers and saw four muddy miners emerge from the cave on their own, a triumphant moment in the challenging rescue mission.

The cave poses significant challenges, with the men located over 800 feet from the entrance down a steep 45-degree subterranean slope. Despite these obstacles, rescuers remain determined to locate and save the remaining individuals trapped in the caves. The collaborative efforts of the rescue team and the use of advanced technology give hope for a successful outcome in this harrowing situation.
