Claude maker Anthropic files for IPO, setting up public-market test of AI boom

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company known for its Claude chatbot, has recently filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in a confidential manner. This strategic move places Anthropic ahead of its competitor OpenAI, with analysts predicting that OpenAI may follow suit with its own IPO announcement later this year. The decision to go public comes in the wake of SpaceX, which owns Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, also filing for an IPO.

Industry experts believe that these IPOs mark a significant shift in the market, signaling a resurgence in IPO activity after a period of dormancy. With major conglomerates like Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX making their way to the public markets, investors are eagerly watching how the AI sector will perform. The surge in AI-related IPOs reflects the growing interest in technology-driven solutions and their potential to revolutionize various industries.

While the AI sector is experiencing rapid growth and attracting substantial investments, there are concerns among investors about the profitability of companies heavily investing in data centers. Additionally, there is skepticism surrounding the transformative impact of AI on businesses, with some questioning whether the technology will live up to its lofty expectations.

Anthropic recently announced a successful funding round, raising $65 billion and reaching a valuation of $965 billion. The company’s Claude subscriptions, used for coding and various tasks, have generated annualized revenue of $47 billion. Founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei and former OpenAI employees, Anthropic made headlines by refusing government requests to use its AI technology for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.

In response to government scrutiny, President Trump directed agencies to cease working with Anthropic, citing national security concerns. This decision led to the cancellation of federal contracts worth over $200 million, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk.
