Several Republicans vote with Democrats to pass Ukraine aid, Russia sanctions package
The House of Representatives recently passed a bill to provide nearly $2 billion in aid to Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia. The measure, which was supported by a bipartisan majority, aims to show solidarity with Ukraine and send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The legislation, spearheaded by House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, includes sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sector, tighter restrictions on financial institutions doing business with Russia, and the elimination of a sanctions waiver approved by former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the bill allocates $1.8 billion in aid to Ukraine to support the country in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The vote on the bill was made possible through a discharge petition, which garnered enough signatures to bypass the usual legislative process. Despite opposition from GOP leadership, 18 Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure, with only one Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar, voting against it.
Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his disapproval of the bipartisan effort, which saw moderate Republicans and an independent lawmaker crossing party lines to support the bill. The measure now faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where it will require the support of 60 senators to advance to President Trump’s desk for approval or potential veto.
While the White House has not yet commented on the bill, its success in the House reflects a growing trend of bipartisan cooperation on key foreign policy issues. The bill’s passage follows previous funding for Ukraine included in the National Defense Authorization Act, highlighting ongoing U.S. support for the country’s defense efforts.
In a rare display of unity, lawmakers from both parties came together to support Ukraine and push back against Russian aggression. The bill’s passage marks a significant step in U.S. foreign policy and demonstrates a commitment to upholding democratic values and supporting allies in the face of external threats.
