A hospital worker felt healthy. Then he had 3 heart attacks in 4 days: “What have I done to myself?”

Tommy Bell, a 62-year-old hospital worker in Florida, always prided himself on living a healthy lifestyle. He didn’t smoke or drink, ate well, and stayed active by walking over 10,000 steps a day at AdventHealth DeLand Hospital. However, his perception of his health was shattered when he experienced chest pain while driving home from work one day.

Tests revealed that Bell had a blockage in his “widowmaker” artery and calcification around his heart, putting him at risk for a cardiac event. He underwent a procedure to have a stent placed in the artery, but soon after, he suffered a heart attack due to a blood clot that formed post-surgery. This led to two more heart attacks within four days, leaving Bell shocked and questioning what had happened to his seemingly healthy body.

Dr. Janak Bhavsar, an interventional cardiologist at the hospital, explained that the blood clot and a large blockage in Bell’s artery led to the complications. A specialized procedure called intracoronary lithotripsy was performed to break up the calcium and widen the stent. Bell also received a second stent and was put on blood thinners to prevent further clot formation.

After a challenging recovery period, Bell returned to work at the hospital, determined to make changes to his lifestyle. He met with the rehabilitation team to discuss dietary adjustments and focus on leaner meats, salads, and healthy snacks. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Bhavsar were also scheduled to monitor his progress and prevent future heart issues.

Bell reflected on his past diet choices, acknowledging the impact of years of fast food consumption on his health. While he thought he was eating right, he realized the importance of monitoring salt and cholesterol intake. By making conscious changes to his eating habits and seeking support from fellow heart attack survivors, Bell is determined to shape a healthier future for himself.

His experience has not only transformed his perspective on health but also deepened his appreciation for the support and care he received from the hospital staff. Bell’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive health measures and the power of community in overcoming challenges.
