Karmelo Anthony convicted of fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf at Texas track meet
Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old high-school student, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow student Austin Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco. The jury deliberated for three hours before reaching a verdict in the case that shocked the community.
The tragic incident occurred on April 2, 2025, when a dispute over seating at the track and field event escalated into a violent confrontation between Anthony and Metcalf. The trial, which lasted four days, featured graphic testimony and evidence that visibly shook jurors and the victim’s family.
Despite claims of self-defense, Anthony was convicted of the top charge of murder and now faces the possibility of life behind bars. The defense team raised over $690,000 in support of Anthony’s case, with some supporters attempting to frame the incident as a racial issue, alleging that Metcalf was a white bully targeting Anthony, who is black.
Witnesses, including students, coaches, and law enforcement officers, testified about the events leading up to the fatal stabbing. Metcalf’s teammates recounted how the altercation began when Metcalf asked Anthony to move from under their team’s tent, leading to a heated exchange that turned violent.
During the confrontation, Anthony warned Metcalf not to touch him before pulling out a folding knife and stabbing him in the chest. Despite efforts to save him, Metcalf succumbed to his injuries, while Anthony fled the scene before being apprehended by coaches.
Throughout the trial, emotional testimonies and graphic evidence, including autopsy photos, painted a grim picture of the events that unfolded at the track meet. Metcalf’s family was visibly distraught during the proceedings, with one coach breaking down on the witness stand while recalling the victim’s death.
As the trial concluded, Anthony, who did not testify in his defense, will now await sentencing by the judge. The case, which captivated the community and sparked debates about race and violence, serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of escalating conflicts to violence.
