Joba Chamberlain makes emotional Savannah Bananas appearance

Joba Chamberlain, the former Yankees pitcher, made a touching appearance at the Savannah Bananas game on Thursday night. Chamberlain was announced as a surprise Savannah Banana for the team’s game in Nebraska and pitched the fourth inning in honor of his late father.

In an emotional moment, Chamberlain paid tribute to his father, Harlan Chamberlain, who passed away in March 2025. Harlan, who battled polio and used crutches most of his life, still found time to play catch with his son and teach him about pitching. Chamberlain reflected on his father’s guidance and discipline, crediting him for shaping the person he became.

Returning to Haymarket Park in Lincoln, where he once led Nebraska to the 2005 College World Series, Chamberlain took the mound to cheers from young fans. He high-fived them before pointing his hat to the sky in honor of his father. The moment was a poignant reminder of the bond between father and son, as well as the impact Harlan had on Chamberlain’s life.

Chamberlain’s baseball career saw him play for the Yankees, Tigers, Royals, and Guardians over 10 seasons in the MLB. He was known for his triple-digit fastball and ability to perform in clutch situations. Despite facing injuries and struggles with consistency, Chamberlain’s passion for the game never wavered.

During his time with the Yankees, Chamberlain helped the team win their 27th World Series title in 2009. He pitched to a 2.84 ERA in 10 playoff appearances, solidifying his place in Yankees history. Throughout his career, Chamberlain maintained a 3.81 ERA and tallied seven saves and 546 strikeouts.

As Chamberlain took the mound for the Savannah Bananas, it was a moment of reflection and gratitude for the journey that brought him to that point. The support of his family, especially his father, was a driving force behind his success in baseball. Chamberlain’s appearance at the game was not just about pitching, but a tribute to the memories and lessons passed down from one generation to the next.
