2 charged with trying to rob ATF agents during undercover gun purchase
Armed Robbery Attempt on ATF Agents Leads to Shootout in Country Club Hills
In a shocking turn of events, two individuals have been charged with attempting to rob undercover ATF task force agents during an undercover firearms investigation in south suburban Country Club Hills. A third person is also facing charges for assaulting an agent during the incident, which escalated into a violent shootout resulting in injuries to the suspects.
According to a federal complaint, a group of approximately five males and one female made an attempt to rob two undercover ATF agents and a confidential informant during a firearms transaction in the 18800 block of Loretto Lane. The suspects involved in the incident have been identified as Amif Fagan and Demond Edwards.
The ATF agents had been conducting an investigation into an individual suspected of trafficking firearms in the Chicago area. The agents had already made two previous firearm purchases from the suspect earlier in the month and had set up a third transaction at the Country Club Hills location to acquire eight firearms for $8,700, facilitated by a confidential informant.
On the day of the incident, two undercover agents and the confidential informant picked up the suspected gun trafficker in Crestwood and proceeded to the Country Club Hills meeting location. Upon arrival, a Dodge Dart carrying six individuals, four of whom were masked, pulled up on the block. Fagan and Edwards emerged from the vehicle and approached the undercover agents, while another individual brandished a firearm towards them.
Fagan and Edwards then drew their own firearms and aimed them at the undercover agents and informant, prompting one of the agents to respond by drawing his service weapon and instructing the suspects to drop their guns. Shortly after, an armed ATF response team arrived on the scene and fired at Fagan and Edwards as they pointed their weapons at the agents, resulting in Fagan sustaining injuries.
Following the shootout, officers pursued Edwards, who resisted arrest and assaulted an officer before being shot. A firearm was recovered near the location where Edwards was apprehended. Meanwhile, Cashonn Toney attempted to flee in the Dodge Dart but collided with an ATF vehicle before fleeing on foot.
The City of Chicago agency COPA has launched an investigation into the incident, as one of the law enforcement officers involved in the shootout was a Chicago police officer assigned to the ATF task force. COPA stated that the officer discharged their weapon after observing the attempted robbery and engaging in a pursuit with one of the suspects.
