A Chicago man, Keshawn Gilmore, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a harrowing carjacking incident that took place on June 8, 2025, at the Aldi parking lot located at 620 West 63rd Street. Gilmore pleaded guilty to armed robbery and received his sentence from Judge William Gamboney.

The victim, a 66-year-old grandmother, had taken her 6-year-old grandson to the grocery store and was in the parking lot when Gilmore approached them with a black handgun. He demanded the woman’s keys and forcefully took off in her black 2024 Buick SUV, leaving the grandmother and her grandson in shock. Surveillance footage captured the entire terrifying ordeal.

Chicago police were able to track down the stolen vehicle on the Dan Ryan Expressway, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on South Kedzie Avenue. Gilmore was apprehended at the scene, still wearing the same clothes as seen in the surveillance footage. Two handguns were recovered from the vehicle, further solidifying the evidence against him.

Due to Illinois law, Gilmore will likely serve half of his 18-year sentence with good behavior, amounting to nine years behind bars. He will also receive credit for the 375 days he spent in Cook County jail during the legal proceedings.

The grandmother and her grandson experienced a traumatic event that no one should ever have to endure. Thanks to the swift actions of law enforcement, Gilmore was brought to justice and will face the consequences of his actions.
