52-year-old Outback Steakhouse rival chain closes 24 locations

Rising food costs driven by inflation have been a significant challenge for steakhouses across the United States, impacting both high-end and budget establishments. The surge in beef prices, which saw steak prices rise by 16% to $12.73 per pound in March 2026, has had a direct impact on menu prices and deterred some customers from dining out at steakhouses, resulting in a decline in restaurant revenue.

Several well-known steakhouses have been forced to close their doors in recent months due to these financial pressures. Among the establishments that have shuttered locations are Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, McCormick & Schmick’s, and Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill. Additionally, Quaker Steak & Lube is on the verge of closing one of its locations as well.

One franchisee of Golden Corral, Conroe Corral Murphy LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas on June 8 but continues to operate amidst financial challenges.

In a surprising turn of events, the last remaining Quaker Steak & Lube location in Clearwater, Florida, is set to permanently close on July 5. The General Manager, Hilliary Smith, announced the closure in a heartfelt Facebook post, marking the end of nearly 23 years of service for the restaurant.

The Quaker Steak & Lube chain has a rich history, originating in 1974 in an abandoned gas station in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Known for its muscle car-themed ambiance and cook-your-own-steak concept, the chain offers a variety of menu items, including steaks, chicken wings, ribs, burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Despite its popularity and numerous accolades, the chain has faced its share of challenges in recent years.

After filing for bankruptcy in 2015, Quaker Steak & Lube underwent a series of ownership changes, eventually landing in the hands of JDK Management Company in 2021. JDK Management Company, which also operates Perkins Restaurant franchises and several chain hotels, acquired the Quaker Steak brand with plans to revitalize and expand the chain.

Currently, Quaker Steak & Lube operates 27 locations across eight states in the U.S., with plans for future growth and development under its new ownership. Despite the closures and financial difficulties faced by the chain and other steakhouses, industry experts remain optimistic about the future of the franchise.

The challenges faced by steakhouses due to rising food costs and other financial pressures highlight the ongoing struggles within the restaurant industry. As businesses navigate these obstacles, adaptation and innovation will be key to ensuring long-term success in a highly competitive market.
