Scam Alert: Don’t Fall for These Common Text Message Tricks

A recent Google lawsuit uncovered a sophisticated phishing operation run by a group of fraudsters known as “Outsider.” These scammers have been using AI technology to create thousands of fake websites, resulting in losses of $1.9 billion since July 2023. The group targets consumers with attention-grabbing text messages, claiming undelivered packages, unpaid toll fees, and now, impersonating phone companies.

The latest scam involves sending fake alerts impersonating mobile carriers, enticing users to claim rewards like free headphones or Apple Watches. However, the link provided leads to a counterfeit website where users are prompted to enter sensitive information, allowing scammers to track keystrokes. These fake websites are generated using AI-assisted code to closely mimic actual carrier websites, making it challenging to distinguish between the real and fake sites.

Google reported approximately 55,000 suspicious messages linked to these scams on Android’s default texting app in just a two-week period in May. The company has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in New York to shut down Outsider’s websites and communication channels to protect its public image.

To protect yourself from such scams, it is advised not to click on any links in unsolicited messages related to rewards points, undelivered packages, or overdue tolls. Instead, visit your mobile carrier’s or bank’s official app or website directly to verify any pending issues on your account.

In addition to the Google lawsuit, there are other scams currently circulating that consumers should be aware of. One such scam involves a telehealth network charging customers exorbitant fees for compounded GLP-1 drugs they never requested. Before signing up for any online prescription service, it is recommended to research the company’s reputation and read the cancellation policy thoroughly.

Another prevalent scam targets Apple users through phishing campaigns via phone calls, emails, texts, and browser pop-ups. These messages falsely claim suspicious activity on the recipient’s account and urge immediate action to prevent consequences like deleted photos or unauthorized charges. Apple advises users to never share their Apple ID credentials or payment details and to verify their account directly through Apple’s official channels.

It is crucial to remain vigilant against various types of scams, including imposter scams, phishing and spoofing scams, online shopping scams, investment scams, and romance scams, among others. By adopting safe online practices, such as verifying requests from organizations, avoiding clicking on suspicious links, and reporting any fraudulent activity, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to scams.

If you suspect you have been targeted or have fallen victim to a scam, take immediate action by contacting your financial institution, changing passwords, and reporting the incident to the appropriate authorities. By staying informed and proactive, you can safeguard your personal information and financial assets from scammers in today’s digital landscape.
