Survey: Pet Owners Can’t Keep up With Rising Vet Costs

Pet owners are increasingly willing to make sacrifices for their animals, but rising medical costs are putting that devotion to the test. According to a recent survey conducted by Money and Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, 77% of dog and cat owners consider their pets to be “like a child.” However, 76% of them admit that there is a price point at which they would consider declining a veterinarian’s recommended treatment.

This dilemma reflects the modern pet owners’ struggle to balance their desire to provide the best possible care for their pets with financial constraints. The cost of veterinary medicine has been steadily increasing, with some estimates suggesting a 60% jump in the last decade. This rise in costs is outpacing household incomes, making it difficult for pet owners to afford necessary medical care for their furry companions.

Even households earning over $100,000 a year are feeling the financial burden of unexpected veterinary expenses. More than half of pet owners surveyed said that an unplanned vet bill of under $1,000 would cause significant financial stress, while nearly one in five admitted that any surprise vet expense, regardless of size, would strain their finances.

Many pet owners resort to using credit cards to cover vet bills, but this strategy can lead to a cycle of debt, especially if they struggle to make monthly payments. Without access to savings, insurance, or affordable financing options, pet owners may find themselves skipping essential routine care or hesitating to seek emergency treatment when their pets need it most.

In this challenging reality, the cost of caring for a beloved pet becomes a luxury that fewer Americans can afford. As veterinary costs continue to rise, pet owners must carefully consider their financial capabilities and explore alternative options for managing their pets’ healthcare expenses.
