Concealed carry holder detained after shooting man during ‘verbal altercation’ in West Rogers Park

A recent incident in West Rogers Park resulted in a concealed carry license holder being taken into custody after shooting a homeless man during an altercation. The Chicago police report stated that officers were called to the 6400 block of North Richmond Street early Saturday morning after reports of shots fired and a person shot.

According to the police statement, a 45-year-old man was walking outside when he got into a verbal altercation with a known offender. The offender then produced a firearm and shot the victim multiple times in the torso. The victim was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. Interestingly, the shooter, who lives near the scene of the shooting, revealed to responding officers that he fired his weapon in self-defense after being attacked by the other man.

At the scene, police found at least eight shell casings and identified the injured man as a homeless individual who frequents the area near Devon Avenue. Records show that the victim has been arrested 15 times in the past year, with his most recent arrest being for drug possession just a week prior to the shooting.

As of now, no charges have been filed, and Area Three detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. It is important to note that the Chicago police did not disclose the shooter’s concealed carry license status in their public statement.
