Mets’ defensive woes hit another low with Little League homer
The New York Mets continue to struggle on the field, with their latest embarrassment coming in the form of a bizarre play that resulted in a Little League home run for the Toronto Blue Jays. Mets starter Sean Manaea gave up a routine single to George Springer, but a series of errors by Juan Soto and A.J. Ewing allowed the Blue Jays runner to score on what should have been a simple play.
Springer’s bloop single bounced past Soto in left field, who misjudged the ball and let it go past him towards the wall. Ewing then made a failed attempt to scoop up the ball, resulting in a fumble that allowed Springer to make his way around the bases. Despite Soto’s sprint towards the loose ball, Springer was able to cross home plate, much to the delight of the Rogers Center crowd.
The scoring decision labeled the play as a triple and an error on Ewing, preventing Springer from being credited with a home run. If it had been ruled a leadoff home run, it would have brought Springer closer to tying Ricky Henderson’s record of 81 career home runs.
Mets fans, already frustrated with the team’s performance, took to social media to express their disappointment. One fan lamented, “Every day I wake up I hate myself for being a Mets fan,” while others mocked the team’s misfortune, jokingly referring to the play as the “Soto shuffle” and dubbing the team the “New York Mess.”
Ultimately, the Mets fell to the Blue Jays 2-1, marking their ninth loss in their last ten games. The team’s struggles continue as they search for ways to turn their season around and regain some momentum on the field.
