AI could make people dull, one scientist fears. Here’s why.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize human cognition, driving advancements in various fields such as science and technology. However, new research suggests that AI-powered large language models (LLMs) could also have a detrimental impact on human creativity and diversity.

According to a study conducted by Columbia Business School professor Sandra Matz and her co-authors, LLMs tend to provide predictable and normative information, leading to a homogenization of decisions and ideas. By predicting the most likely next word or event in a sequence, AI algorithms limit the range of possibilities and steer users towards average choices.

The study analyzed over 110,000 real-world decisions made by individuals and compared them to choices made by generic and personalized AI agents. Using data from the myPersonality project on Facebook, which conducted personality tests on users, the researchers found that AI agents tend to play it safe within a user’s preferences, discouraging exploration of unconventional or quirky options.

Matz highlighted that AI agents are programmed to avoid risk and prioritize familiar choices to keep users engaged. This can lead to a narrowing of interests and a reduction in diversity of experiences. To counteract this trend, Matz proposed the implementation of an “exploration mode” option in AI applications, allowing users to receive unexpected and unconventional recommendations.

By introducing features that encourage users to step out of their comfort zones and explore new possibilities, developers can ensure that AI enhances human creativity and diversity rather than stifling it. Matz emphasized the importance of preventing individuals from becoming predictable and ensuring that cultural preferences remain diverse and dynamic.
