Popular Southern California radio personalities laid off amid US cuts
A beloved California radio station, 99.1 KGGI based in Riverside, has bid farewell to its final local voices as iHeartMedia implements widespread layoffs across the nation. Last week, long-time on-air personalities Evelyn Erives, Nick Nack, and Garrison King were let go, leaving KGGI without any local hosts. The trio had been among the few familiar voices at the Inland Empire station.
The cuts at KGGI are part of iHeartMedia’s restructuring efforts to optimize its radio programming through technology, aiming to operate more efficiently across markets. While the company did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, reports indicate that several on-air personalities and staff members have been laid off nationwide.
iHeartMedia, which owns over 850 stations in 160 markets, including popular Los Angeles-area stations, has been implementing cost-cutting measures to navigate the evolving landscape of the radio industry. The company has also been focusing on podcasting as traditional radio faces challenges with audience retention and advertising revenue.
Despite iHeartMedia’s previous commitment to human-driven content with its "Guaranteed Human" campaign, the removal of local hosts at KGGI raises questions about who or what will fill their roles. The station’s transition to a host-less format reflects broader changes within the industry.
As KGGI navigates this new chapter without its familiar voices, the future of the station remains uncertain.
