Prosecutors to present evidence against Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson
A pivotal court hearing is set to commence on Monday to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed with a murder trial for the suspected killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Utah prosecutors have claimed to possess a substantial amount of evidence against the accused, 23-year-old Tyler James Robinson, and are seeking the death penalty in this case. The state is scheduled to present its evidence at a preliminary hearing in the 4th District Court in Provo, Utah, starting on Monday and expected to last up to five days.
District Judge Tony Graf will review the evidence presented by prosecutors to decide if there is sufficient justification to hold Robinson for trial and if prosecutors can pursue the death penalty. Prosecutors only need to demonstrate reasonable grounds for a trial for Robinson. If the judge orders Robinson to stand trial, prosecutors must then prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. He has not entered a plea to the charges, and his defense team has not commented on his innocence or guilt.
The tragic shooting of Kirk took place in September 2025 during an outdoor rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was fatally shot at the event.
Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and his parents are anticipated to attend the preliminary hearing of the suspect. On the day of the shooting, Kirk was hosting an event as part of his “The American Comeback Tour,” where he was addressing issues with students when he was shot in the neck.
Robinson allegedly fled the scene after the shooting but surrendered to authorities the following day after his father identified him in photos released by law enforcement. According to court documents, Robinson confessed in a note to his roommate, stating his intentions to target Kirk.
The suspect allegedly sent messages to his boyfriend indicating his plan to carry out the attack on Kirk. Authorities found a handwritten note from Robinson expressing his motives for the crime. Robinson’s boyfriend revealed that the suspect had grown tired of Kirk’s views, leading him to commit the violent act.
As the court proceedings unfold, the family and supporters of Charlie Kirk await justice for his untimely death. The outcome of the preliminary hearing will determine the next steps in the legal process as the case moves towards trial.
