Coinbase AI alert draws backlash after pushing World Cup result before kickoff
Coinbase Sends False “Breaking News” Alert About Norway vs Brazil World Cup Match
Coinbase (COIN) recently made headlines for sending users a false “breaking news” alert claiming that Norway’s soccer team had defeated Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match. However, the game had not even started at the time of the alert.
The notification stated that Erling Haaland had scored twice in the match at MetLife Stadium. Interestingly, Coinbase’s own prediction-market page still showed the game as being weather-delayed during that time.
Several users shared screenshots of the misleading alert on social media on Sunday. In response to one post, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the issue and mentioned that he was investigating it with his team. The alert was reportedly sent at 10:26 a.m. ET, while the actual match didn’t kick off until 4 p.m.
Max Branzburg, the head of consumer & business products at Coinbase, later clarified that the incorrect information had been rectified. He added that the company had implemented certain updates to prevent such inaccuracies from occurring in the future.
Addressing the use of AI technology for 24/7 trading insights, Branzburg mentioned in a tweet that while it was beneficial, there was a need to fine-tune it to avoid similar issues in the future.
As for the actual match between Norway and Brazil, it did take place with Haaland scoring twice. However, the final score was 2-1 in favor of Norway, contrary to the false alert sent out by Coinbase.
