Thrift Shop Day: Refresh Your Home Without Overspending
On Monday morning, August 17, National Thrift Shop Day offers a friendly reminder: refreshing your home does not have to mean starting from scratch: or spending a fortune. A thrift store visit can uncover useful storage, sturdy furniture, artwork, lamps, and small pieces that bring personality to a room. The day also supports the community-minded work of many nonprofit resale stores. (National Today)
Before heading out, walk through your home with a short list. Measure the spaces you want to update, note doorway widths, and set a firm budget. A list helps you look for what you need instead of bringing home every charming object that catches your eye.

At the store, inspect furniture in good lighting. Gently rock chairs and tables to check for wobbling, examine joints for cracks, and open every drawer or cabinet. Solid wood, sturdy metal, and complete hardware are usually worth closer consideration. Minor scratches can add character; warped surfaces, deep cracks, mildew, strong odors, or pest signs are reasons to walk away. Be especially cautious with used mattresses and heavily upholstered pieces.
Once a find comes home, vacuum it thoroughly, including undersides and crevices. Clean sealed wood, plastic, and metal with a mild soap solution, avoiding excess water on wood. For upholstery, check the cleaning label, test products in a hidden spot, and never mix cleaning chemicals. Let everything dry completely in a well-ventilated area before use.

A good secondhand purchase should solve a problem, fit your space, and leave room in your budget for repairs. If the cost of paint, replacement hardware, or reupholstery outweighs the savings, leave it for someone else.
This week, visit a local shop, bring a neighbor, and donate clean, usable items you no longer need. Share your best thrifted home find with the Brownstone Worldwide community. A small refresh can make home feel new again: without losing the character that makes it yours.
