Administration sharing info about asylum seekers with Iranian government, lawsuit claims
The Iranian American Legal Defense Fund has taken legal action against the Trump administration, alleging that confidential information about Iranian asylum seekers is being shared with the Iranian government. This lawsuit, filed in Washington, D.C., highlights the risks faced by Iranian asylum seekers, including pro-democracy protesters, religious minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community who seek refuge in the U.S. due to the dangers they face in Iran.
The complaint emphasizes that disclosing confidential information to the Iranian government violates asylum seekers’ rights to confidentiality and puts them at risk of persecution, torture, and even death upon their return to Iran. The group claims that over 100 individuals have been deported to Iran during the Trump administration, further underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group representing the IALDF, stated that sharing this information violates federal regulations and endangers not only the asylum seekers but also their families and acquaintances still residing in Iran. The group is seeking intervention from a federal judge to prevent further sharing of confidential information and appoint a special master to review the files of Iranian detainees already affected.
The complaint alleges that despite the current conflict between the U.S. and Iran, the Trump administration has continued to share immigration files with the Iranian government. While in-person meetings reportedly ceased before the war began, ICE allegedly continued to mail or deliver documents to the Iranian Interest Section. Additionally, Iranian officials have reportedly met with detainees at ICE facilities, even without their consent, further exacerbating the asylum seekers’ fears of being identified by the oppressive Iranian regime.
The IALDF’s legal action aims to protect the rights and safety of Iranian asylum seekers and ensure that their confidential information is not compromised. By shedding light on these concerning practices, the group is advocating for accountability and justice for those fleeing persecution in Iran.
