Airlines allow passengers to rebook flights for free at some airports amid TSA chaos

As the partial federal government shutdown continues, security screening lines at some U.S. airports have become a major issue, leading to long wait times for passengers. In response to the chaos, major airlines are offering passengers the option to cancel or rebook their tickets free of charge. This comes as TSA officers work without pay for the sixth consecutive week, with no end in sight to the funding impasse that has paralyzed the Department of Homeland Security.

Passengers at airports like Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport have reported waiting up to five hours to go through TSA checkpoints, resulting in missed flights and significant frustration. Summer Martinez, a traveler at the airport, shared her experience of missing three flights due to the lengthy security lines. This situation has prompted airlines such as Allegiant Air, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines to waive cancellation and change fees to provide some relief to affected passengers.

Allegiant

Allegiant has introduced a “travel with confidence” guarantee during the government shutdown, allowing customers to change or cancel their itineraries at no additional cost. This offer includes no change fees for eligible bookings and the option to receive a refund for canceled flights. Passengers must contact Allegiant’s customer service team via phone, chat, text, or email to make changes to their flights. The airline also advises travelers to allow extra time for security screening and to check their local airport’s website or social media for TSA wait time updates.

Delta

Delta Airlines has issued a waiver specifically for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, recommending passengers to allocate at least four hours for security screening before their flights. Travelers can rebook their trips to fly on or before March 30 without incurring any fare differences, as long as they book in the same cabin class. This flexibility aims to mitigate the impact of extended wait times at security checkpoints.

United

United Airlines has waived all change fees and fare differences for passengers traveling to or from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where TSA worker absences have led to wait times of up to six hours. Travelers with original travel dates on March 23-24 can reschedule their trips to depart on or before March 31, as long as the new flights are in the same cabin and between the same cities as originally booked. This waiver offers relief to affected passengers facing delays and missed connections.
