Alderman apologizes for ‘misconstrued’ comments about ‘startled’ murderer who killed Loyola student in the ‘wrong place, wrong time’

Alderman Maria Hadden (49th Ward) has issued an apology for comments she made in a recent TV interview following the tragic murder of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman in Rogers Park. In the interview with Fox Chicago, Hadden appeared to suggest that Gorman’s murder may have been a result of being in the “wrong place at the wrong time” and that she and her friends may have inadvertently startled the shooter at the end of the Loyola pier.

The video clip of Hadden’s comments quickly spread on social media, with many criticizing her for victim-blaming and making excuses for the perpetrator. Hadden mentioned in the interview that based on information from the police and students present at the scene, it appeared to be a random act of violence rather than a targeted attack.

However, following the arrest of 25-year-old Jose Medina, who has been charged with Gorman’s murder, it became clear that the shooting was not a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Prosecutors stated that Medina shot Gorman in the back as she and her friends tried to flee the scene.

In response to the backlash from her initial comments, Hadden took to social media to express her condolences to Gorman’s family and clarify her position. She emphasized that the shooter is solely responsible for Gorman’s death and that her comments were not meant to blame the victim or downplay the seriousness of the crime.

Hadden also addressed the media’s portrayal of her words, stating that certain outlets were intentionally twisting her statements for sensationalism. She reiterated her commitment to supporting Gorman’s family and the community during this difficult time.

In light of the tragedy, Hadden encouraged donations to the Sheridan Gorman Memorial & Scholarship Fund, set up by the family to honor her legacy. She urged the community to come together in solidarity and kindness to support one another in the wake of this senseless act of violence.

As Rogers Park mourns the loss of Sheridan Gorman, Hadden emphasized the importance of unity and compassion in the face of tragedy. The community stands together to honor Gorman’s memory and provide support to those affected by this heartbreaking event.
