Apple to launch AI-juiced AirPods and sunglasses, going head-to-head with Meta
Apple is gearing up for an exciting lineup of new product releases, including AirPods equipped with cameras and AI technology. These new AirPods, part of Apple’s Visual Intelligence development, will feature tiny cameras embedded in the stems to provide instant context through computer-vision sensors. The AI-juiced earbuds will not capture photos or videos but will enhance Siri’s capabilities by offering visual context for tasks like navigation.
In addition to the camera-equipped AirPods, Apple is also preparing to launch its first smart glasses, codenamed N50, by late 2027. These smart glasses will rival Meta’s AI-enabled camera sunglasses and will feature advanced cameras for capturing photos and videos. While Meta has faced criticism for privacy concerns with its AI and camera tech embedded in sunglasses, Apple’s AI AirPods will have external lights to indicate when data is being sent to the cloud.
Apple’s upcoming product releases, including the new AirPods, a next-gen foldable phone, and a new iPhone model to celebrate the product line’s 20th anniversary, are expected to be the company’s largest debut of new products yet. These releases will showcase Apple’s push into AI-powered hardware, with Visual Intelligence already integrated into Siri and iOS 27 to allow users to ask questions about objects and surroundings.
The AirPods initiative is just one part of Apple’s broader strategy to incorporate AI technology into wearable devices. The company is also working on an AI-focused pendant with a camera that can be worn as clothing or as a necklace. These new products are anticipated to coincide with John Ternus’ first full year as CEO after he takes over the role in September.
Originally targeted for a 2026 release, the AirPods faced delays due to challenges in artificial-intelligence software development and the need to build visual AI models. Despite the setbacks, Apple is forging ahead with its plans to launch innovative products that will further establish its presence in the AI device market.
