Bodum Recalls 5.9 Million French Press Coffee Makers Over Glass-Breakage and Burn Risk

CONSUMER SAFETY — October 31, 2026. Bodum USA has recalled approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes because damaged or cracked glass can break unexpectedly during use and expose consumers to hot liquid. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on October 29, 2026.

Which coffee makers are included?

According to the official CPSC recall notice, the affected products are 8-cup and 12-cup Bodum French presses with replaceable glass carafes in the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya lines. The products were sold at stores including Target and Walmart, other coffee and home-goods retailers and online from 1974 through October 2026, generally for $15 to $65.

The Bodum name appears on the frame or inner lid of many units and may also be engraved on the glass. Consumers should compare their coffee maker with the identification photographs and details in the federal notice rather than relying on appearance alone.

What is the hazard?

CPSC says a glass carafe that has been damaged or cracked can fail during normal use. Using a metal spoon or other metal utensil to stir the coffee can damage the glass. The company identified 70 reports of carafes breaking, including 48 reports of burns. These are reported incidents, not a prediction of what will happen with every unit.

What should owners do?

Stop using metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe immediately. Do not use any carafe that is cracked or damaged. CPSC instructs owners to contact Bodum to receive a plastic Bodum stirring spoon and a warning label. This is the stated recall remedy; the federal notice does not announce a universal refund or replacement of the entire coffee maker.

For recall assistance, call 888-879-8213 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, email Bodum3302@sedgwick.com, or visit Bodum’s recall site. CPSC lists recall number 27-055.

What it means

This is a practical product-safety notice for a common kitchen item. If a household owns a Bodum French press, the next step is to identify the model, inspect the glass and follow the manufacturer’s official remedy. Do not discard a product or share identifying information with unsolicited callers claiming to handle the recall.
